I was having a conversation with somebody recently about the different techniques we use in sewing clothes. So I began to make a list. I’m not talking about the basics like laying out a pattern, cutting, simple darts. They are important for sure, but I’m more interested in unusual or challenging techniques like
Welt pockets, with shaped welts, or zippers
Using underlining,
Sewing smooth curved seams
Buttonholes: welts, bound, hand stitched
Topstitching
Fly fronts for zippers and buttons
Tailoring
Zippers; lapped, concealed, fly front
French seams
Sewing sheers
Hand sewing
Collars and cuffs.
Bagged linings
Plackets and button bands
Seam bindings

I’m going to work my way through them, using patterns that incorporate as many of these as possible.

A coat with bound seams inside and an interesting underlining that you can see. Maybe a floral poplin inside a peachskin trench? Or my navy peacoat?
